Known as “Max Carey” as he roamed center field and swiped bases at will, the Hall of Famer began using that name (to maintain amateur status as “Maximillian Carnarius”) after playing professionally for the South Bend Greens at the age of 19. Well, “Carey” never forgot his birth name, which he signed on these (2) (8-1/4 x 3-3/8") documents. Included is a 1934 check signed “Max G. Carnarius” in blue ink (“9” strength) and a 1952 promissory note signed “Max G. Carey (Carnarius)” in blue ink (“9” strength). Full photo LOA from JSA.
