The face of a storied franchise which authored its lone championship season in 1924, Hall of Famer Walter Johnson is the subject and endorser of this Type I photograph with an inscription of that glorious year. The 3-1/8 x 4-11/16” sepia-toned photo depicts Johnson in his Senators home apparel. The uniform dates the likeness to 1918-1923, though Johnson has signed in blue-ink fountain pen (“7-8” strength) and inscribed “Sincerely Yours - 1924.” The photo presents nicely with mounting remnants and a “NATIONAL PHOTO” stamping on the reverse. Full photo LOA from JSA.
Note: National Photo was a short-lived issuer from the late-1910s through the mid-1920s. Part of the Scripps chain, National Photo distributed its photographs through the Newspaper Enterprise Association.
