A wondrous keepsake decorated with the signatures of five iconic diamond figures, the offered baseball holds infinite appeal with its potent autographs and intangible qualities. The medium is an OAL Harridge sphere whose trademark stampings date to the 1930s. Beholding the signatures and their arrangement, one is prone to muse over the occasion and wax poetic about these legends. Straying for the norm, we’ll begin on a side panel, where Babe Ruth has executed a black-ink fountain pen scripting that shows (“8-9”) strength. Just below, a John McGraw signature is a clubhouse version. The stampings panel is home to a black-ink fountain pen endorsement of Connie Mack (“7-8” strength). To the left are both Nick Altrock (“5” strength) and Gabby Street (“5-6” strength). Full photo LOA from JSA. More on our website.
The medium-toned orb is minimally affected by scattered surface abrasions and a hole drilled in the sweet spot to facilitate previous display. None of these flaws, however, affect the autographs of Ruth, Mack or Altrock, with very minor abrasions minimally touching Street’s penning.
For the sake of accuracy, we noted that Mack has signed the stampings panel and that the others reside on adjacent panels. Mack’s signature completely obscures the trademark stampings (which have endured age-induced fading). Thus, it appears that Mack has signed the “sweet spot.”
